AD Chickens are just part of my personality at this point! It’s a warning to anyone thinking of getting some, they become a part of your daily routine, in all the best ways! People have stopped me and said ‘Oh you’re that Chicken lady I follow…’ and honestly, what a complement! 😍 If you can’t tell, I just adore keeping chickens. They keep me company in the garden, make me smile every day with their antics and of course, provide delicious eggs as a thank you too. I have 7 Pekin Bantams (the ones you see in the clip) and 2 Cream legbars. They are larger hens who lay beautiful blue-shelled eggs. The Pekin Bantams are such characters, they are mischief in small packages. 🐥 Keeping chickens is a lifestyle. They get me up every morning to check in on them and tidy their coop, they provide a wonderful distraction as they potter around the garden and I get to collect the eggs at the end of the day. If you’re considering getting hens, think about the space you have, do you have room for a covered run, would you like them to free range and of course, research breeds that suit your space and ideals when it comes to hens. This could be lots of eggs, or it could be calmer, quiet hens. There’s lots of breeds out there. At the moment we’re still in ‘Flockdown’ in Norfolk due to Avian flu restrictions. I’ve been bringing my hens into my greenhouse for a bit of feathery chaos and to help me clear the bed ready for planting. I’m hopeful they’ll be able to roam round the patch soon! AD By adding flowers to my vegetable garden I’m not only adding colour and texture to the patch, I’m creating the perfect environment to attract our friendly pollinators too! Flowers do so much more than look good and I always aim to plant a real mixture of veg and blooms in all of my beds. There are some must grow flowers I think should feature in every garden and those are: 🐝 Nasturtiums - They look wonderful flowing over the edge of beds and do a fabulous job of attracting the butterflies, and hungry caterpillars, away from your tasty veg! 🌼 Marigolds - A bright and beautiful flower with a strong scent that helps detract pests 🌻Sunflowers - It’s not a veg patch without them and the bees adore them! There’s lots more flowers to choose from. Get creative and add some colourful flowers to your vegetable patch, you wont regret it.
