Do you prefer painting reels that are super sped up like this, or reels that show shorts clips but at real time? I usually try to use smaller real-time clips, but I can see the appeal of watching more of the painting process just sped up. Denali National Park 🌲✨ I did a terrible job photographing this one, but I keep forgetting to take better pictures before starting the next painting 😅 A downside of working in a bound sketchbook I guess! I like to try and capture a sense of scale in all these park paintings, and this was definitely one of the easier parks to do that with! Gouache on cold pressed watercolor paper

Swipe through to see this Joshua Tree National Park painting come together ✨ I don’t normally use masking in my paintings, but I knew the front tree was going to need a few layers of gouache, and I didn’t want things to get too muddy. In the end I’m not sure it helped much, and it was probably more work than it was worth 😂

A couple of recent paintings vs their reference image ✨ I like to share these comparisons as a little reminder for anyone just starting out or struggling with perfectionism that you don’t need to copy your reference images exactly I know I’ve said this dozens of times now, but I think it’s an important lesson that’s always worth repeating. You’re allowed to pick and choose what details to include - focus on making a good painting and try not to worry about how true to the reference you are

Zion National Park 🏔️✨ I had such a difficult time picking just one spot to paint for Zion, but whenever I get stuck researching and committing to one painting I always look for something that will help capture the grand scale of these parks. And this view of Angel’s landing definitely does that! It was more than a little intimidating, but it might be one of my favorites to date! (It did get off to an extremely rough start if you saw my story this weekend 😂) I used a couple of references for this one, including both Dan Cutler and Reed Geiger on Unsplash
