Had fun yesterday testing running shoes for efficiency as they relate to me directly. Running legend @zachbitter helped me set this up with @labratrundown at @enduranceperformancelab here in Austin. Dustin is such a wealth of knowledge especially deciphering data. I ran at 6 minute 31 seconds per mile pace with each of my four shoe models x 5-minutes x 2, which meant 40-minutes of running the exact same pace, fresh and further down the road, with different shoes on the same runner, testing v02 max etc., I.e. running efficiency and the time difference one could realize saving or losing over the course of a 26.2-mile marathon running at 2 hour 50 minute pace (6:30s). So interesting. It should be noted I tested my favorite trail shoe, favorite daily runner, good road running racer and then the absolute lightest road shoe…so basically two road racers versus two more trail types just so I could see the results for myself. I’d never run daily miles in a racer as they don’t have enough support but in race day setting like for Boston I wanted to know what kind of performance improvement I could expect between the options. My approach is to train with a slightly heavier, durable shoe that keeps me healthy during high mileage weeks and run fast on speed days or races in a responsive, light shoe.
